Genotype- by-environment interaction for marketable tuber yield in advanced potato clones using AMMI and GGE methods

Analysis of genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) is critical in the local potato breeding and selection programme to obtain information on performance genotypes for yield adaptability stability. The objective this study was assess marketable tuber 18 advanced clones compared commercial variety Spunta at four locations (Bigara, Réduit, St. Antoine Rivière du Poste), representative major soil types Mauritius. They were analysed stability using additive main effects multiplicative (AMMI) model genotype effect x environment (GGE) biplot. Five gave significantly highest terms overall ranking with increase 47.4% 59.6% over control Spunta. AMMI analysis variance detected (P < 0.001) higher proportion variation due (42%); followed by (21%) which justified multi-locational testing. AMMI1 biplot demarcated 142/161/2 142/161/5 as high yielding most stable while 2 identified winning a specific environment. Thus, clones142/161/4 161/142/16 had adaptation Bigara, 29/5/2 21/5/3 adapted Antoine, 21/5/10 Poste whereas 29/5/3 Réduit. GGE biplots two desirable close “ideal genotype”. “which- won- where” view further pointed presence mega-environments, corresponded sub-humid irrigated/humid environments (Réduit, Poste) altitude super-humid (Bigara). These results showed that future both methods can be integrated select superior through multi-year evaluation.
